6 Tips for Managing Stress During the Custom Home Building Process

March 7, 2025

Building a custom home can be one of the most exciting things you and your family ever undertake. But it might also be very stressful. It’s a huge project and not one you’re likely to repeat anytime soon, so you want to get everything right. And because you’re building your home, so many emotions are attached. You want your home to be a refuge, a place where memories are made and people come together. You want your home to be a place you love. So when you’re building it, there’s a lot of pressure. But don’t worry–we’ve built a lot of custom homes over the years, and we can help you manage your stress while you take on this project.

#1. Choose a Builder You Trust

This step is incredibly important. If you don’t trust your builder to communicate honestly with you, to do what he says he will do, and to complete the work with excellence, your stress level will soar. You need to know that your project is in safe, trustworthy, competent hands. But how do you know who to choose? This blog post goes into detail, but here are the basics:

  • Read reviews and talk to people who have used a particular builder. Ask if they’d use them again, and why or why not.

  • Go online to a potential builder’s website. See if the values that are important to you are highlighted and discussed.

  • Visit their office or a jobsite and note if things are run professionally.

  • Ask about their change order policy.

  • Make sure they have a project manager dedicated to each project they work on.

  • Discuss how they approach your budget and needs.

  • Learn about the design-build process and decide if it’s the right choice for you.

Your builder will make or break your project. Make sure you’ve done your homework and that you feel comfortable with your choice.

#2. Set a Realistic Budget

Building a custom home is obviously a monetary commitment, and one of the major sources of stress when building comes from financial worries. If your budget is tight, you might find yourself constantly watching and checking to make sure you’re doing okay. One good tip to remember is to set aside at least 20% of your budget to cover the unexpected. Even with companies that have really great reputations for sticking to the budget, the unforeseen can arise. With that cushion, you won’t panic if it does.

The more you and your builder plan before the project gets started, the more likely your project will stay close to the budget. Companies should use a design team to understand and implement your vision for your home. They should spend time planning before the first hammers begin to swing so there are fewer surprises. Builders who do this can also help you come up with a much more realistic budget–they know the ins and outs of your project and can predict much more accurately what it will cost.

#3. Stay in Communication with Your Builder

The more open and consistent your communication with your builder during the custom home-building process, the less stress you will feel. You won’t be wondering what’s going on or why a particular thing is taking so long. You’ll know the timetable. You’ll know if any delays or changes are necessary. And you’ll feel much more in control of the situation and of your emotions. This is one reason we’re committed to good communication at BOLT Builders. We keep you informed at every stage so you are confident that your vision is being realized.

#5. Prepare Your Mindset

Yes, the home building process can be stressful. But it can also be exciting and fun! We have a little thing we call the Funk Chart that walks you through the inevitable highs and lows. If you expect that you will at times feel excited, weary, happy, frustrated, and elated as you go through the process, you won’t be surprised by your emotions, and you will remember that they are normal. Try to prepare yourself:

  • Be flexible, knowing that things will likely come up at some point, and change the plans a little.

  • Keep a sense of humor. A little cheerfulness goes a long way toward decreasing your stress level and helping you enjoy yourself more!

  • Remember that this is just a temporary disruption to your life and that even though it seems to be going on forever, construction will end.

  • Cultivate a practice of gratitude. When you feel overwhelmed or stressed, try thinking of three things you are thankful for in the custom home building process.

#6. Keep Your Eye on the Prize

Even though the process can be stressful, at the end of it, you will have your own custom home. You will be able to move in, settle in, and enjoy the benefits of living in a space that was created just for you and your family. Think of the holidays you’ll spend here, the meals that will be cooked and enjoyed around the table, and the cozy nights spent in front of the fireplace. You’ll enjoy the built-ins and the custom range hood you selected, and you’ll get to take a bath in the spa-like bathroom you and your team designed. It will be a place you love to live, and it’s just around the corner. Keep your eye on the prize and you’ll make it through just fine.

Add Personal Touches

To truly make your guests feel at home, add a few personal touches to the room. A vase of fresh flowers can instantly brighten the space, while a novel or magazine you think your guest might enjoy adds a thoughtful touch. A small, handwritten note with the Wi-Fi information or instructions for the house can also make guests feel more comfortable. Special amenities like high-quality lotions or a guest-friendly snack tray can make the experience feel even more luxurious.
