Smart Technology in the Kitchen

February 21, 2025

Today’s homeowners are savvy and tech-forward: they’re looking for ways to use technology to improve their lives at home. And adding smart technology to the kitchen is a great way to accomplish this goal. A lot of life happens in the kitchen–it’s arguably the hardest-working room in the house. If any room could use a boost in terms of connectivity and convenience, it’s the kitchen.

Smart technology generally includes a wide range of appliances, electronics, systems, and other home features that are WIFI-connected, AI-powered, or both. These devices can often be controlled remotely from a device like a smartphone and can sense, learn, and adapt to various situations. In the kitchen, a lot of smart technology focuses on sensing what is being cooked or processed and adjusting accordingly. Other smart kitchen tech involves storing food or cleaning up.

Smart Appliances

Smart Refrigerators

One of the first appliances to “get smart” in the kitchen–and one of the most useful–smart fridges are a dream for those who can never decide what to make for dinner. They often have screens that allow you to pull up a recipe and display it while you cook, or even to stream a cooking show. You can make grocery lists and have them sent to your phone. You can even have the fridge take a picture of what is inside it and send that to your phone–no more trying to remember if you have eggs or butter when you’re at the store! Some smart fridges can even recognize the items they hold and suggest recipes to you based on the ingredients you already have.

Smart Ovens

A smart oven will send a message to your phone when it’s done preheating. You can set it to heat itself and cook a particular item–a frozen pizza, or pork chops, for example–and it will preheat and cook accordingly. Some ovens let you see inside from your phone so you can make sure you’re not burning the cookies. You can send multiple instructions to the oven at once for multi-step cooking, and you can even tell the oven to keep your food warm for you. Smart ovens often have multiple cooking methods like baking, broiling, air frying, steaming, and grilling. Some have temperature probes that link to your phone so you know when your meat is done. And for safety’s sake (and your peace of mind), your smart oven can alert you if it has been left on. No more double-checking required.

Smart Dishwashers

You can control your smart dishwasher from your device, allowing you to start or stop a wash cycle, or adjust which cycle is being used. Smart dishwashers can also sense how dirty the dishes are and adjust themselves automatically. And they can alert you of maintenance issues and even water leaks, giving you peace of mind (especially if you often run your dishwasher when you’re not home). Many smart dishwashers can be voice-controlled and can monitor water and power consumption, allowing you to track energy use.

Small Appliances

Adding smaller smart appliances to your kitchen is a good way to try out smart features without having to commit quite as much. You may find that you love the convenience and ease so much that you want your whole kitchen to be smart.

  • Smart coffeemakers allow you to brew your morning cup of coffee from bed. You can also have it brew a cup or a pot of coffee, change how you want it made, and use the voice-activated feature to tell it what you want it to do.
  • Smart blenders sense the consistency of your food and adjust their speed and power accordingly.
  • A smart mixer can sense the texture of the bread dough and change how it is mixing the dough and when it’s letting it rest.
  • A smart composter allows you to compost kitchen scraps right in your kitchen, and it notifies you when it’s full. This is a great way to cut back on waste and make some nutritious compost for your garden.
  • Smart kitchen faucets automatically turn the water on and off with voice activation, so you don’t have to touch the handles if your hands are dirty. You can also adjust the temperature and flow, and even tell the faucet to dispense a certain amount of water, meaning you don’t need to use a measuring cup.

How to Incorporate Smart Tech into Your Kitchen

The first step to deciding how to incorporate smart technology into your kitchen is recognizing why you want it.

Smart technology can

  • make cooking and food preparation a breeze, especially if you don’t love to cook.

  • make life easier by allowing you to use and monitor kitchen appliances remotely.

  • add value to your home.

  • increase convenience and safety in the kitchen.

  • benefit the environment by reducing energy and water consumption.

Which of these benefits are most important to you? Consider your why as you decide what tech to include in your kitchen.

Start Small

One way to begin adding smart technology to your kitchen is to go slow. Choose one item–a small appliance or even a larger one that already needed replacing. See if you like it. Add more tech in as you decide it would benefit you and your family.

Go All-In

Or jump in with both feet! If you’re remodeling your kitchen or whole home, building a custom home, or have a number of items that should be replaced, go ahead and make your entire kitchen smart. There may be a bit of a learning curve as you master the various new technologies, but in the end, you could end up saving so much time and energy that you’ll wonder how you ever managed before.
